The rule of St Benedict was written by St Benedict of Nursia in the 6th century to govern the lives of his monks. It has since then guided the lives of monks and nuns who follow the Benedictine monastic life.

RB1980, or sometimes referred to as RB80, is a translation of this rule that came as a response to the call of the Second Vatican Council to return to the inspiration of the institutes and their adaptation to the changed condition of our time (Perfectae Caritatis, n.2).
